AI is taking over entry-level desk work such as drafting licensing documents and safety analyses, but because the NRC requires a human signature, acceptance of AI-generated output is a bottleneck, and demand from SMRs, the Navy, and national labs props up hiring. A degree alone does not earn a reactor operator license.

Major lifespan is the time left until AI is expected to start shrinking hiring of this major’s graduates. It doesn’t mean the major will disappear or that everyone will lose their job.
