Closing the books at the end of a period, building out a forecast, and drafting the paperwork behind a regulatory filing are all things software handles reasonably well already. Because that's the bulk of what a finance team and its junior managers spend their days on, the thinning shows up there first — well before it reaches anyone whose name is actually on the signed statements.
Why does someone still have to run finance?
Negotiating a credit line face to face with a banker, standing in front of a board and outside auditors to defend a set of numbers, and deciding what gets cut when cash is tight are calls someone has to make and answer for personally. A model can suggest an answer, but it can't be held accountable for it the way a person with their name attached can.
What should someone rising toward this role focus on?
Since the mechanical side of closing books and building forecasts is what's moving to software, time spent actually negotiating with a lender, presenting numbers to a skeptical board, and making a real call under cash pressure builds the judgment this role still needs — that experience matters more now than speed at building a spreadsheet.
