Which parts of a professor's work does AI already do?
Delivering a standard lecture, grading routine assignments, summarizing prior research and drafting a paper are all tasks AI now handles at a level that's already useful. That capability, combined with tighter budgets at many institutions, means new faculty lines are the first thing cut or delayed, rather than existing professors losing their jobs outright.
Why does mentoring stay a person's job?
Guiding a graduate student through research nobody has done before requires judgment about a specific person's ideas and mistakes, which isn't something a general tool can take over. The same is true of serving on a hiring or tenure committee and judging a colleague's work directly, someone with standing in the field has to be accountable for that call, which keeps senior positions comparatively stable even as new ones get harder to create.
