What part of formulation moves to machines first?
Large manufacturers already use AI to propose candidate formulas and robots to mix and test many variants faster than a person could by hand, which is why fewer researchers are needed to cover the same product pipeline. What AI can't yet do is put a cream on real skin and judge whether the texture, scent and feel are actually right — that judgment stays with a person for now.
Why does sensory testing keep this role human?
Reading how a panel of real people reacts to a product on their own skin, and judging feel and scent by hand-mixing trial batches in the lab, are physical, subjective jobs that automated formulation tools aren't built to replace. That kind of hands-on, skin-on evaluation is also tied to checking a product is safe before it reaches customers, which is part of why this work moves more slowly than the mixing itself.
What should someone in this field build up?
A chemistry or cosmetic-science background is the usual entry point, often starting as a lab technician mixing and testing formulas before moving to designing them. Because AI increasingly proposes the formula itself, the skill worth sharpening is sensory judgment — training your own sense of texture and scent well enough to evaluate an AI's suggestion quickly, rather than competing with the software on the mixing step.
