Proposals, spec matching and tech Q&A go to AI and buyers self-evaluate, but on-site demos and owning multi-year equipment deals stay human; teams thin slowly.

AI impact · ShrinkingSales Engineer: what AI changes and what stays
Buyers of industrial equipment increasingly research specs and get technical answers straight from an AI tool before they ever talk to a person. That shifts a sales engineer's job away from explaining what a machine does and toward proving, in person, that it will work for this customer.
What part of selling now runs through AI?
Drafting proposals, matching specifications to a customer's needs and answering routine technical questions are jobs AI already handles, and buyers increasingly do that research themselves before a person ever gets involved. What doesn't move to software is standing next to the actual machine at a customer's site and demonstrating that it performs, plus staying the one point of contact through a deal that can take years to close.
Why does this shrink slowly rather than all at once?
There's no license or staffing rule tied to this role, so nothing legally slows the shift toward AI handling more of the proposal work. What slows it in practice is the relationship itself: a multi-year equipment purchase runs on trust built over site visits and past deliveries, and a buyer who has worked with the same person for years doesn't hand that relationship to a chatbot overnight.
How should someone entering this field spend their time?
An engineering background is the usual door in, often after time spent on the technical or production side of a company before moving into sales. Since customers now do their own spec research with AI, the value worth building is what a tool can't fake in person: running a live demo well, reading what a buyer actually needs versus what they say, and managing a relationship long after the first sale closes.
