AI can already draft the design file, the risk-assessment paperwork and the regulatory submission a new medical device needs before it can reach a hospital. What it can't do is watch how a doctor actually handles the prototype, or put a name behind the sign-off that says a patient is safe using it.
What paperwork-heavy work does AI already handle?
Drafting the design-history file that documents how a device was built, the risk-management paperwork that lists what could go wrong, and the submission that goes to a regulator before a device reaches the market are all things AI tools can now produce a solid first draft of. That's shrinking the documentation-heavy side of this job first, well before it touches the testing itself.
Why does a person still sign off on a device?
Watching a doctor or nurse actually use a prototype in a real hospital setting, testing a device on real tissue or a lifelike model built to test it safely, and personally taking responsibility for the sign-off that says a patient can safely use this thing are not steps a company can hand to software — someone's name has to be on that call.
What should a medical device engineer focus on building?
Since drafting and documentation are moving to AI first, spending real time on hands-on testing and watching how clinicians actually use a device in practice builds the judgment behind a safety sign-off, the part of the job that stays a person's longest. A biomedical engineering background supports this path.
